Five Favorite Fall Activities | Friday Five

It's the Friday Five linkup time. And you know what day it is... tomorrow? Game Day! You may be able to guess one time on this list of five. This week's topic is

Five Fav Fall Activities

Five Favorite Fall Activities

1. Tailgating

This one has to be number one. Ever since I was a little boy fall meant driving up 322, often sitting in horrendous traffic then breaking out the grill and tailgating in Happy Valley. I grew up tailgating at Penn State. So. Much. Fun. Now, the tailgate maybe a little more sophisticated, or at least a little more well equipped, but it's still grilling food pre-game then cheering until you have no voice. When I first went to Bloomsburg University, they looked at us like we were crazy when we tailgated, but it slowly grew. Now, they have some nice little tailgates there too. It's just a part of college football as far as I'm concerned.

2. College Football

In case you couldn't tell in the last, I love me some college football. Growing up going to Penn State games, it's hard not too. Even my wife, while she may deny this being she is a Pitt fan, had a great time when she's been to games. She'll insist she cheered against the other teams, but I know. It really is an experience. 110,000 plus fans screaming, being in the student section as the chant and jump in unison, just crazy. With that said, I still loved every minute of football at the division two school I went to, Bloomsburg University. College football is just fun. Is it game day yet?

3. Marching Band

Since the 9th grade fall means two things: football and marching band. I always love watching football, but I was also in the marching band. That meant practices all week, games Friday and competitions Saturday. After high school was college marching band (now with Saturday football) and then after college it was helping with marching bands and my color guard directing wife. While this year has been a little more hectic and less hands on for me (or no hands on) but I'll still be there to watch my wife's guard perform and listen to the band play on!

4. Drinking Hot Apple Cider

I love me some apple cider. Heat it up, throw a little spice and indulge. My favorite is the cider at Colonial Williamsburg. I even had someone tell me what they add, but I have crap for memory so I forgot. *sigh* Oh well. That's why we go every year for Grand Illuminations and drink cider all weekend long. And yes, Grand Illuminations is in winter but the cider thing still works for fall, it's not exclusively winter to me, that's just the best example I could make to it.

Why yes, that hat does have three corners.

5. Costumed Candy-rama

Let's all get in disguise, go door to door, threaten people for candy and then EAT IT ALL!!!! Ok, maybe I got a little over excited and carried away, but... 1. dressing up in a costume is fun. 2. who doesn't love candy (even if I can't eat it all anymore). 3. it is even more fun with kids (my daughter wants to be Cinderella and dress her baby brother as "Jack the mouse". How cute is that?

  2. I second (I guess third haha) the hot apple cider. Your daughter is very clever - love the idea of having her little brother dress as "Jack Jack"

    1. Yeah. She has, on occasion, told people her brother is going to be "Jack the mouse" with out giving them context. They get confused.

    1. I'm an equal opportunity tailgater. I tailgate at Phillies games as well. If it's a sport (and maybe even if its not) we'll tailgate.

  4. Oh yes, college football, baby! It's so fun that my husband and I met at VT, and are both crazy Hokie fans. But it doesn't matter the school, it's the college football atmosphere!

    Thanks for the shout-out!

    1. That's what I love about college football. I can watch almost any game. Going to any game can be so much fun. I just need to figure out when I can squeeze one or two in this year hopefully.

      You're welcome. :-)

  5. I love football, too, John. The University of Arkansas is located about 3 hours north of where I am, in Little Rock, but to keep the alumni happy they play two games/year at a Little Rock stadium built pretty much just for them. The Little Rock games are louder and more exciting than their true "home" games, and the tailgating is out of this world! We are allowed to take over an entire public golf course - big screen TVs, smokers & grills, RVs, you name it! HA! It's a sight for such a small city. I hope you have a wonderful weekend and enjoy your games!

    1. That sounds like a heck of a time. I love the spectacle of it all. For a couple years we had an RV spot from a friend who wasn't using it, so we'd use it for our pickup truck and then our tailgating gear and one guy next to us in his RV would pull out 2 big screen tvs and a satellite dish. If games were on, they were on there, if not, it would have video games or College Gameday coverage. He was a good tailgating neighbor to have.

    1. Yeah. I need to find a game / reason to tailgate. As of now, I don't have any planned, which just isn't right.

  8. Football and Tailgating is definitely part of the fun about fall. But my team sucks big time, so I haven't been to a game yet (and I've been knocked up too). The games are still fun, but I just wish we could pull off a decent game. here's hoping.

    1. Yeah. I've been there. They can still be fun, but more fun when you win.

I think being pregnant / new baby gives you a free pass. But next year, they need to be there with school colors on. Haha.

  11. Love college football. I'm a husker girl myself (well, and Pitt!) so naturally despise Penn State but I do have a few really good friends who are alumni!

    1. Well, the Pitt is ok, but glad for that rivalry to get back started. As for the Huskers, I'm still sore over '94.

    1. Oooo... good choices. I do like a good cup of tea, a good book is always welcome, and love a fire in the fireplace. Combo for the win. Anything front of a fire place is nice actually.
