Donald Duck New Balance Shoes | #MagicalMickey

One of my favorite pieces of runDisney swag I've ever purchased are my Goofy runDisney 2014 shoes. They're picture has appeared in many posts, because I just love them. They're bright, comfy, and they have Goofy on them. In 2014, they released them all at once. This year, the have been releasing them throughout the year. In January, they released some "retro" designs, which I was not a huge fan of, but they are just not my style.  The latest shoe to be announce, features a fine feathered friend.

Donald Duck New Balance Shoes

The latest edition to the 2015 line of runDisney shoes are the Donald Duck Fresh Foam Boracay shoes. These join the Tinker Bell Fresh Foam Boracay shoes that were introduced at the Tinker Bell Half Marathon. While I have not tried the Fresh Foam, the style of these shoes are one that I like.

The blue and white gives that classic Donald design, with a great orange sole for that duck in you. Like all runDisney shoes, they offer plenty of nods to the characters they are themed for: such as his red bow tie and a black tag on the back that matches that of his hat.

These shoes join the 2015 lineup and will be available at the runDisney Health and Fitness expo, starting on September 3, at the Disneyland Hotel.

One interesting thing I noticed when looking at the full line up of shoes, was two different black and white shoes, from those introduced in January. What did I miss? As it turns out, at Princess Half Marathon weekend, they introduced some non-retro designs, which went under the radar (for me at least). While I like more color, I enjoy these more than the retro shoes from January.

What do you think of the new shoe? Do you own and runDisney shoes?

Running to the Beat | Playlist Party

I love music. If you read enough of my posts, you've seen me write about playlists on more than one occasion. I also love to run to music. I recently reviewed the  Plantronics BackBeat FIT headphones as part of the BibRavePro program, and they are fantastic for running to the beat. Today, I'm joining up with Jess from See Jess Run to share some of my running playlist.

Running to the Beat

I have many ways I listen to music when I run. I have several playlists on Spotify, I love to use RockMyRun, and I even have some playlists of my own music on Google Play. My lists are ever changing, so I'm going to pick a couple of the songs from the later to share with you. I have a variety of music I enjoy (evident in past playlist posts), but many of these are similar in their upbeat pace, though spanning some timespans. Instead of describing why, I'll just give you some embedded links to play the music and let the songs speak for themselves. Afterwards, be sure to go by See Jess Run for the linkup.

1. American Woman - Lenny Kravitz

2. Moves Like Jagger - Maroon 5

3. Jessie's Girl - Rick Springfield

4. Dr. Feelgood - Mötley Crüe

5. Spoonman - Soundgarden

Do you run to music? What's your favorite pick me up song?

#BibChat

This week's #bibchat on September 1 will again be sponsored by Plantronics. I suggest you stop on by, because they are fantastic, and maybe we can talk some more music.

Five Summer Adventures | #FridayFive

Welcome to the weekend. Unfortunately, this is a weekend where the summer is drawing to a close. Of course, that does mean mild temperatures are coming, which I cannot wait for. This week's Friday Five linkup topic is five things I did this summer. This summer was a good one and a busy one for my family. Frankly, five is hardly enough to even give just the highlights. So I'd like to share with you some of our adventures.

Five Summer Adventures

1. Celebrated my son's first birthday

This summer my son turned one year old. It's amazing to think. That first year flew by so fast. He's a big little boy too. He started out being on the smaller side of a little peanut Now, at one year old, he is in the high 90s in percentile for everything as well as wearing 18 month and 24 month clothes. He sprouted up quick. He's so very different but so very much the same as his older sister.

2. Enjoyed some time at the beach

We took a short trip to the beach this summer, which was a lot of fun. We had a hotel right on the beach, the kids both enjoyed the sand and water, played some mini golf and even got some nice runs in while there.

3. Took my son to his first baseball game

While at the beach, we took my son to his first baseball game: the Myrtle Beach Pelicans. They have a nice little stadium so the game was a lot of fun. We had our ice cream helmet sundaes, dad got a beer and we even got a warm up ball, so he has a little something to put on the shelf from his first game. Surprisingly, my son even stayed awake all the way until the bottom of the 8th inning.

4. Attended my first BronyCon

My daughter is a huge fan of My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic. It was one of those things that got suggested on Netflix, and once she started watching, she was hooked. I have to say though, it's not a bad show. It's not my classic ninja turtles, but it's good. I can tell you all the ponies, what they've done, where they live. I even have a Discord statue on my desk at work. When we saw that BronyCon was up in Baltimore, we did some research and found out it was very kid friendly. So we purchased our tickets and surprised her with an adventure. She had an absolute blast. She even me the voice of her favorite pony, Pinkie Pie. I highly recommend it if you have a MLP fan in your house, of any age.

5. Met the four voices of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

Now, while at BronyCon, my daughter got to meet her favorite character, earlier in the summer, I got to meet mine. At AwesomeCon DC, I got to meet the voices of all four original ninja turtles! It was my childhood come to life in a surreal dream. I say that, but there are things you need to understand. When meeting Cam Clarke, the voice of Leonardo, he loved our outfits so much (involving a shirt and a dress my wife made for our kids), he took a picture of us. That's the reverse of how it goes. Then meeting Barry Gordon (Donatello), he showed us pictures of his grandkids. Townsend Coleman (Michelangelo) and Rob Paulsen (Raphael) both talked us for a good amount of time, on multiple ocassions. Also, when seeing them (as well as the amazing Jess Hartnell), they would remember my daughter. Even the last thing we did before leaving on Sunday, she wanted to "say goodbye to the turtles and chilly (Jess)".

How was your summer? Have you ever met your childhood... and loved it?

Training for a Challenge - Runner's World Hat Trick | BibravePro

This fall, I'll be running the Runner's World Hat Trick on behalf of BibRave as a #bibravepro at the Runner's World Half Marathon & Festival (you can join me). I'm very excited to take on my first real challenge race. I like to always challenge myself to not only improve but to do more. This is a perfect opportunity to do both. But to take on something like this, I need to do more than just run. I need a plan!

Training for a Challenge

To run any race, you can always benefit from have a plan. Heck, for almost anything in life, you can benefit from having a plan. Well, unless you want to plan to not have a plan, but then you're just confusing us all. With that plan, you need to have a goal. Is it your first time running the distance (or at all) and your goal is to just finish upright? Are you looking to improve your time and be faster? Do you have a specific time you want to beat? These are important questions to have answers for if you want to make the right plan.

Next you need someone who knows something. I am not that person. I have ideas, but I have no actually training in creating training plans or coaching. I'll be happy to give advice, but a certified coach I am not. I personally love the Jeff Galloway plans that he puts together for free for runDisney races. You can check out the training section for the runDisney web site for plans for all of their distances and challenges. They'll even combine with your level of experience and those goals we talked about (finish upright, run faster). These are general plans, much like you'll find around the internet for free and for a price. If you have a specific goal time or more specialized needs regarding health or super crazy schedules, you'll likely benefit from more personalized plan from a trainer / coach. Jeff Galloway also does them through his site where you can get some e-coaching or I have a large number of blogger friends who are also certified that I am sure would be more than happy to help create a personalized plan. You can also go the full on group training route and not just a plan with a trainer or with a group. A local running stores, such as my local Potomac River Running, are often a good place to start as they often offer training courses that will give you people to run with training for the same distance.

Now you have a plan, but you need to do one last thing with the plan: look at the race. What kind of course is it? Are there a lot of hills? Is there a really challenging part during the race? If there is an early or late hill, you'll want to try and have your long runs mimic this. If there are a lot of hills, you just better be ready to train on as many as you can get. Heck, even if it's flat, training on a lot of hills will help you.

You mentioned a challenge back there in the title?

Ok, so far all my training plan talk has been more about a plan in general and not for a challenge. I did this because the same rules apply, but the plan and runs need to reflect the extra portion of your challenge. Are there back-to-back days of running? Are there days where there are multiple races? Are you crazy like me and have both in one challenge? If you answered yes to any of these, you need to face the music that your training will require nothing less than the same. I'm training for the Runners World Hat trick. That means I'll be running a 5K and a 10K both on Saturday only to follow it up with a half marathon on Sunday. This will be no easy feat, but that's why I'm training for it.

For my plan, I started with my man, Jeff Galloway, and took his Glass Slipper Challenge plan as my base. This plan is based on Jeff Galloway's basic principle that most weeks, it requires two maintenance runs during the week that are nothing more than 30-45 minutes, whatever distance you get. They're meant to keep you out there running (he said typing at 11pm realizing he missed his for the day). Then the plan includes a long run, that generally alternates growing distance every other week with a shorter run. This is generally done on the weekend, but you actually do what is best for your schedule. The only difference is with the Glass Slipper Challenge plan, it includes some later weekends with back-to-back days of running, to mimic the extra day of the challenge. The Glass Slipper Challenge is for a 10K followed by a half the next, which is almost what I need. I simply made a modification to the plan that when I do back-to-back days, I also add a relatively sized run to be paired with the first day of the runs. This will help me mimic the 5K and 10K on the same day.

I am currently in week 8 of my training. This will be my first week with two runs on the weekend. This will be hot on the heals of my 9 mile run this weekend I had at Myrtle Beach. That went quite well and I enjoyed running a lot at the beach, despite the heat. I ran early to avoid the most of it. And for water, I was able to refill at a Starbucks, so it wasn't all bad. I do need to invest in a better hydration solution, so Orange Mud, here I come. Two of my running friends, Jeremy and Smitha, are both ambassadors and both love theirs. I just need to get to the local store that has them so I can try them on to find out the model I want.

I wanted to share with you my plan for taking on the Runners World Hat Trick, mostly because I like to share my experiences here on the blog. That way, you can learn from my successes and failures. But also, I'm sharing so that you can help keep me honest. The best plan in the world won't help me succeed if I don't stick to it, so if you see me slacking, please call me out on it. I'll appreciate it, even if I mutter a bit about it.

Have you ever run a challenge? How did you train for it? What do you do for training plans?

Star Wars Florida Race is Official | #MagicalMickey

It's official! A Star Wars themed race is being added to Walt Disney World for 2016. I am so excited about this. I actually speculated on this race as a replacement for Expedition Everest Challenge or Tower of Terror 10 Miler previously, so I'm happy to see it finally happen. I actually was talking to another runDisney fan friend of mine thinking that they may do so after the construction of the Star Wars land addition to Disney's Hollywood Studios. I don't mind sooner rather than later, though.

Image: runDisney Facebook

UPDATE: The Disney Parks blog has now put out an official announcement to go with the press release.

See the official press release below from Disney Sports News.
April 14-17 event in Florida joins Star Wars-themed race at Disneyland Resort and features new Kessel Run Challenge and Dark Side Challenge

LAKE BUENA VISTA, FL (Aug. 25, 2015) – runDisney is summoning the Force today to announce another Star Wars-inspired intergalactic journey, this time to the dark side.

The “Star Wars Half Marathon – the Dark Side” enters the galaxy April 14-17, 2016, at Walt Disney World Resort in Florida and pays homage to the dark side forces of the Star Wars universe. This new race follows the debut of the popular Star Wars-themed race at Disneyland Resort, which will return in January as the “Star Wars Half Marathon – the Light Side”.

“Ever since we launched the Star Wars race at Disneyland Resort, runners have been clamoring for more, so we’re thrilled to bring the Star Wars franchise together with the runDisney brand to Walt Disney World Resort,’’ said Maribeth Bisienere, senior vice president of Disney Sports Enterprises. “If the inaugural Star Wars race at Disneyland Resort is any indication, this new running adventure to the dark side is sure to be the out-of-this-world experience that runners have come to expect at runDisney events.’’

The new Star Wars race at Walt Disney World Resort will be a journey of personal achievement all its own, involving kids’ races, a 5K and a 10K in addition to the half marathon, plus a variety of Star Wars experiences, medals, events and merchandise inspired by a galaxy far, far away. Among its many features will be a unique 13.1-mile course that propels runners through Epcot, Disney’s Animal Kingdom and Disney’s Hollywood Studios and finishes at ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex. There will also be a Star Wars Dark Side Challenge — running the 10K and the half marathon on consecutive days – that offers each finisher a Death Star-themed medal.

Jedi and Sith Lords who dare to experience both Star Wars races will have the chance to take on the Kessel Run Challenge — completing the Star Wars half marathon missions on both coasts. Kessel Run Challenge runners can earn a commemorative “Coast to Coast” medal inspired by the Millennium Falcon starship. Race registration opens Sept. 22 at www.runDisney.com.

The addition of this second Star Wars race continues the recent wave of significant growth and popularity of runDisney events domestically and internationally. This is the second new runDisney race announced for 2016, joining the Disneyland Paris Half Marathon Weekend (Sept. 23-25 at Disneyland Paris), and the fourth addition to the runDisney series in the last two years (Star Wars Half Marathon at Disneyland Jan. 2015 and Avengers Super Heroes Half Marathon Weekend Nov. 2014).

Each year more than 200,000 runners sign up for runDisney events, which often sell out in record time.

“We are committed to creating extraordinary experiences and events that appeal to runners of all ages and attract even more fans of our various brands and franchises to the sport of running, creating opportunities for them to live a healthier and more active lifestyle,’’ said Bisienere.

Park Expansions Galore | #MagicalMickey

This was an exciting weekend for Disney Parks. This weekend was the D23 expo, which can best be described as Disney comic con. It's we're they've started having a lot of big announcements and unveilings, and this year was no exception. I'm going to concentrate on two of the announcements that made me the most excited.

Park Expansions Galore

If you're a regular reader of the Magical Mickey linkup, you might remember a post called Pixar Place Pondering. In that post, I mentioned two rumors for expansions in Disney's Hollywood Studios: a Star Wars themed are and an expansion of the Pixar Place area. As it would turn out, I was correct in what I shared with you and both rumors were true.

First, came the announcement of Star Wars-themed lands coming to both Walt Disney World and Disneyland. This is also not the addition of just a ride or two, it will be a 14 acre expansion at both parks, the largest single-themed land expansion ever for Disney Parks. The concept art looks fantastic, but that is the point of concept art.

Images from Disney Parks blog

I am sure the expansion will be amazing as well, but I have to say, there had better be a cantina with an animatronic band playing. I can't wait for this to open, though I know it will take a lot of time, though you know I'll be planning a trip whatever year it finally opens

The second announcement was for a Toy Story Land expansion also coming to Disney's Hollywood Studios. This expansion is in response to the overwhelming positive response to Cars Land in Disney California Adventure. The land will shrink you down to the size of the toys and drop you in Andy's back yard. It will add two new attractions as well as give a much needed expansion to Toy Story Midway Mania!

Images from Disney Parks blog

There is a lot more great news for the parks that you can read up on, including Pandora - The World of AVATAR, details about River of Light, and a new film for Soarin'.

Which expansion are you more excited for?

Five Justifying Running Tips | #FridayFive

It's Friday again. As I get ready to right this post (on Thursday), I was working on convincing myself I wanted to wake up early tomorrow morning to run, instead of sleeping and running Friday evening. I know my morning run on Wednesday was beautiful weather, and Friday will be too, but it wasn't quite enough to convince myself. Sometimes you just need to justify it or something else in your brain. This week's Friday Five linkup topic is running tips. I decided I would use a little bit of what I used on myself. Sometimes, you just need some justification to get out there. I know it's not great self control or self discipline, but sometimes just is that way, and maybe one of these will work for you in a pinch.

Five Justifying Running Tips

1. For training distance

Well, 5 miles is half of 10 miles, which is almost 13 miles, so that's close enough to a half marathon.

2. For food

I know Tom is going to bring donuts to work tomorrow, so if I get up and run, I can have the donut I know I'm going to eat anyway.

P.S. This is the one I used for getting up to run Friday

3. For running gear

You need the optimum gear for optimum performance, so if I'm going to go all in for training, I need to get some new stuffs.

4. For race entries

By registering for the race, I'm helping get myself to run, which is getting myself healthy. Therefore, the more races I run, the more I'm doing for my health.

5. For my wife

If I sign up to run in Disney, that means I get to go to Disney, so I guess I'll run 13.1 miles.

Do you ever justify or bribe yourself?

Register to Fly Like a Fairy | #MagicalMickey

I'm back and (mostly) on track again after some time off at the beach. I had a post for last week to mostly say that, but I unfortunately forgot to schedule. My apologies. Instead, back to our regularly scheduled Magical Mickey linkup. This week, I'm providing you with your helpful registration reminder.

Register to Fly Like a Fairy

On Tuesday, August 10th, at 12 noon EDT, registration for the Tinker Bell Half Marathon weekend opens up. This is a Disneyland race weekend, for May 5 - May 8, 2016. The weekend features the Never Land 5K, Tinker Bell 10K, and Tinkerbell Half Marathon, as well as kid races. Of course, there are also two other special medals offered during this race, the Pixie Challenge for the combination of the 10K and half marathon as well as being Coast to Coast Challenge qualifying. This race is the second half of what you need to earn the special pink Coast to Coast Challenge, with the Princess Half Marathon.

While the absolute crazy frenzy of last year's registrations has died down, if you still want to ensure a certain race or challenge, you need to be online when it opens. All the races haven't been selling out in minutes, but the more popular ones are still going within the first hour. This pixie dust filled event can be popular, given is more woman-centric theme, so take that into consideration. For the full information on the race, go to the official runDisney site. For the quick, down and dirty on cost, I give you a portion of their email.

As with all runDisney registrations, I suggest you have your active.com account set up and ready to go. Make sure you know you're password and test it. You don't want to be clicking 'forgot my password' instead of clicking 'register'. So if you want to earn your wings, set your alarm, and have some faith, trust, and pixie dust.

Do you plan to run at Tinker Bell half marathon weekend? Do you believe in fairies?

Beat the Heat: UV Half Buff Review & Discount | BibRavePro

Disclaimer: I received the UV Half Buff to review as part of being a BibRave Pro. Learn more about becoming a BibRave Pro (ambassador, tell them I sent you), and check out BibRave.com to review find and write race reviews!

If you've been following my social media, you've seen pictures of me testing my latest product from the BibRave Pro program, the UV Half Buff. I've used a lot of different products to keep the sweat out of my face, because it's important to me and bothers me, so this product is one that is simple but important to me as a runner. I've given it a thorough work over, and am here to share my thoughts (which are my own).

Beat the Heat: UV Half Buff Review & Discount

Let's start with what a Buff is. A Buff is a tubular piece of sweat wicking, multifunctional fabric. The particular version we're looking at is the UV Half Buff. The "UV" is for the sun protection provided by the fabric, blocking 95% of UV radiation. The "Half" is because it is half the size of the original Buff.

So, how do you wear it?

There are many ways to wear the Half Buff. I've demonstrated several ways on my run. While I could demonstrate them myself, I thought I'd use a model I had handy to demonstrate.

Ok, I'll admit. My choice of model may have been influenced by taking my daughter to Bronycon this weekend.

How well does it work?

I received my Buff early, so I had plenty of time to test it out. I took it on a ton of runs with me. The primarily way I wore it was around my head, in a sort of hairband style, since that was the way I found I liked most. This way had several benefits: it kept the sweat off my entire face, it protected my forehead and portion of my head from the sun, all while still letting the heat off my head.

I tried out some other ways to wear it, including on my wrist to wipe the sweat. One way that is perfect for a hot day, fellow BibRavePro Jeremy suggests. Take the Buff, soak it in cold water, and wear it around your neck. On an especially hot day, throw in some ice cubes.

I gave the Buff a lot of runs and it stood up to all of them: late evening humidity, early morning sun, 9 miles at the beach. Each and every one of them, my whole face stayed sweat free.

The Takeaway

So what's the final takeaway? The Buff works fantastic for me. It kept a fantastic amount of sweat off my face without making my head hot. It's just what I need for the humid summer time runnings. The UV protection is also perfect for a redhead like me, but important to all. The Buff helps you beat the heat, beat the sun, and therefore beat your run!

A Day in the Life of My 1 Year Old | #FridayFive

I'm excited for this week's Friday Five linkup. The topic is a day in the life. Now, it didn't say it needed to be a day in my life. I couldn't help but use this for someone other than myself. I decided to share the day of my little guy and what I believe would be his inner dialogue.

A Day in the Life of My 1 Year Old

1. Starting the day

I'm awake, let's go downstairs!

Ah the playroom, all neat and clean... DESTROY!!!!!!

I'm hungry. Here, let me throw toys into the kitchen to let you know I'm ready to eat.

Yum, pancakes! *two bites later* I'm done with these! *throw to floor* I'm hungry!

Yum, yogurt! I bet this would feel good in my hands... *waits for bite, shoves whole hand in mouth* It does! I bet it'd feel even better in my hair!

2. Playtime

Look! A bin of toys! I bet that would go great on my head!

Look! A table with some toys! Let's flip and stand on it! Owwww, my feet hurt!

Look! A bucket! I bet that would go great on my head!

3. Helping Around the House

Mommy has a basket for clean diapers? I should help. She probably doesn't want this IN the basket.

Mommy has a basket of clean laundry? Looks comfy.

Ok, helping is a lot of work.

4. More Playtime

Look! A box from a toy! I bet that would go great on my head!

A slide? Going down is easy. Let's go up it... I've made a terrible mistake!

Hey sister. What are you reading?

Come on, sis! I have a great place we can read!

My turn with a book. RRRRrrrrrrrmmmm!

Is Dad home?! Is he?! Get out of my way table, I must see!

Hi Dad! Pppbbbttt!

5. Bedtime

Uuuuggghhh! I'm tired!

Wait, bath?! Yes. Let's get upstairs! Why is this gate in my way? Aaagggghhhhrrrr!!!!

Up the stairs, up the stairs, up the stairs! Hey, will my head fit between these columns? Why are you picking me up?!

Let me in the bath! I don't care about getting my clothes off! Who cares about the diaper, Dad?!

Gah! I'm tired! Why are you dressing me? I'm tired!

Mmmm.... bottle. Ok, I'm done with this. *throws to floor* Where's my paci?!

Zzzzzz.....

*laid down in crib*

Zzzzzz... what are you doing laying me in my bed?! Aaaaaa!!!!!!

I'll accept your bed or rocking chair only!

That's better. Good night Mommy.

Is this how your day goes?
